A New State Park for the Chattanooga Region

A large section of McDonald Farm in northern Hamilton County is becoming Tennessee's 70th state park, bringing a major conservation and outdoor recreation project to the Sale Creek area.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has announced the name Angel's Hollow State Park. Its official dedication is scheduled for November 6, 2026, alongside the opening of the Hamilton County Fair.

How Large Will It Be?

Hamilton County transferred approximately 1,305 acres of McDonald Farm to the state. Combined with existing state-owned property, the park is planned to encompass roughly 2,500 acres.

More than 300 acres of McDonald Farm will remain under Hamilton County control, including the historic homestead and fairgrounds.

The park's visitor center is planned for Sale Creek, with the landscape spanning the foothills near the Hamilton-Rhea county boundary.

An Investment in Recreation and Conservation

Tennessee lawmakers approved $45.3 million in the fiscal 2027 budget for the new state park.

State and local officials envision outdoor opportunities ranging from introductory family experiences to hiking, biking, camping and longer backcountry trail connections.

Those possibilities are part of the park's development vision. Residents should not assume that every planned trail, campground or amenity will be available on dedication day.

A Name for the Landscape

Governor Bill Lee and First Lady Maria Lee chose the name Angel's Hollow as a reflection of the area's peaceful natural scenery.

The project is intended to preserve an important section of the McDonald Farm landscape while complementing the adjacent county park.

Local leaders say it could also support tourism and nearby businesses over time.

What Happens Next

The November 6 dedication will mark the park's official introduction, while details about public access, completed facilities and future programming may continue to develop.

Anyone planning a visit should check the latest state park information before traveling, particularly around the dedication and fair weekend.

For 423 Daily readers, Angel's Hollow represents a significant addition to the region's outdoor future.
