A busy intersection in the Apison area could see a substantial redesign under a Hamilton County proposal for a new single-lane roundabout.

The planned location is where East Brainerd Road meets London Lane, a junction used by commuters and families traveling near East Hamilton Middle and High School.

County materials describe congestion and traffic safety as central reasons for changing the intersection.

Engineers estimate the roundabout project at approximately $3.46 million.

The county says the work would take place within the existing roadway and right of way.

Officials identify federal disaster-relief funds as the project's financing source, with no local matching funds required.

Because the proposal involves environmental considerations in a floodplain or related area, the county is accepting public comments as part of its review.

Written comments are due by November 5 to Hamilton County Development Services at 1250 Market Street, Suite 3046, Chattanooga, TN 37402.

Residents who use the intersection regularly may want to review the plans and raise practical questions about traffic movement, construction impacts and access.

The proposal is intended to keep vehicles moving more smoothly while improving safety, but the project is still in the review process.

Drivers should not treat the roundabout as an already completed improvement.
