Around the 423: Roadwork, Lane Closures and Construction Updates |
A driver-focused roundup for October 20–21 covering Hamilton Place, Signal Mountain, St. Elmo and Marion County |

What Drivers Should Know This Week
Road construction, paving and utility work are affecting several major routes in and around Chattanooga this week. Tennessee transportation officials have listed traffic shifts, flagger-controlled work zones and overnight restrictions across Hamilton County and neighboring Marion County.
The following information reflects the October 15–21, 2026, roadway activity report. Weather and field conditions can change schedules, so check for updates before leaving.
I-75 at Hamilton Place: Interchange Work Continues
The Hamilton Place interchange remains one of the area's biggest active construction zones. The ramp from southbound State Route 153 to northbound I-75 is reduced to one lane.
Traffic shifts affect I-75 in both directions as well as Shallowford Road entrance and exit ramps and the Hamilton Place Mall exit ramp.
Hamilton Loop Road is closed between the intersections near Markman's Jewelers and Texas Roadhouse while crews build a retaining wall and install storm drainage.
Drivers should expect a reduced speed limit and watch for construction vehicles. Overnight lane closures are permitted between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Signal Mountain Road: Daytime Utility Restrictions
On Signal Mountain Road, also designated State Route 8, utility crews are working between Runyan Drive and Glendale Drive.
Flagger-assisted lane closures are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the project window of October 19 through December 4.
Motorists should be prepared to stop and proceed slowly past workers, trucks and temporary traffic controls.
St. Elmo Avenue: Two Areas of Utility Work
Utility work is scheduled along St. Elmo Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets through October 21, with flaggers from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A separate work zone between 56th and 57th Streets has a longer planned window, extending through December 18 during the same daytime hours.
Both locations may require drivers to pause while crews control one lane at a time.
Additional Hamilton County Paving
State Route 17, from Campbell Street toward State Route 153, has nighttime pavement-marking work scheduled through October 31. Flagging may occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
On State Route 2, covering portions of U.S. 41, U.S. 64 and U.S. 74, milling and paving may bring flagger-controlled traffic between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. through October 31.
Along Lookout Mountain Scenic Highway, utility work between Crandell Avenue and Stonedge Road may cause daytime flagger-assisted lane closures through January 2027.
I-24 in Marion County: Overnight Resurfacing
Drivers traveling west of Chattanooga through Marion County should anticipate nighttime resurfacing on Interstate 24 between approximately mile markers 152.2 and 156.
The schedule calls for Sunday-through-Thursday night work from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m., with single-lane closures and intermittent ramp restrictions.
At least one ramp is expected to remain open during the work, with Tennessee Highway Patrol assisting traffic control.
State Route 108: Longer-Term Slope Repairs
In Marion County, State Route 108 is reduced to one lane near local mile 2.8 for slope stabilization work, including grading, drainage and paving.
Temporary traffic signals direct alternating traffic through the site. The project has an estimated completion date of August 31, 2027.
Motorists should allow time for signal queues, especially during busy periods.
Plan Ahead and Watch for Updates
Give yourself additional travel time when heading toward Hamilton Place, Signal Mountain or St. Elmo, particularly during advertised work hours.
Avoid distractions near construction crews, follow temporary speed limits and never assume a previously closed lane has reopened until signs and barriers confirm it.
Roadwork schedules can change because of weather, equipment or unexpected site conditions. For the most current driving conditions, check Tennessee's official 511 traffic information before departing. |
