Chattanooga’s World Cup chapter with Spain is nearing its final whistle.
After weeks of training, fan gatherings, watch parties, and international attention, the Spanish National Football Team is preparing to leave its Chattanooga base camp and head to Los Angeles for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
The city is inviting fans to give the team one final send-off on Tuesday afternoon outside the Embassy Suites by Hilton Chattanooga Downtown. Fans are asked to arrive no earlier than 3 p.m., with the public gathering beginning at 4 p.m. A commemorative plaque presentation from representatives of the Royal Spanish Football Federation to the City of Chattanooga is expected around 4:30 p.m., and the team is expected to depart around 4:45 p.m., though timing could change.
Fans are encouraged to line Broad Street between Embassy Suites and Aquarium Plaza to cheer as the team leaves downtown. City officials are also encouraging nearby businesses to let employees and customers step outside and help create a memorable farewell.
Spain’s stay has given Chattanooga a rare role in the global soccer spotlight. The team used the Scenic City as its World Cup base camp, training at Baylor School and staying downtown, while fans gathered for team arrivals, public events, and local watch parties. The Associated Press reported that Spain chose Chattanooga over larger cities and that around 25,000 people entered a lottery for 1,000 open-practice tickets at Baylor School.
For Chattanooga, the send-off is more than a sports moment. It is a final chance for residents to show the hospitality that helped define the city’s World Cup summer and to mark a chapter that brought international media, visiting fans, and a new wave of soccer energy to the 423.
Spain is scheduled to face Austria on Thursday, July 2, in the Round of 32. |
