Hamilton County Schools Changes Laptop Policy for K–8 Students |
Devices will stay in classrooms for younger students as the district looks to reduce damage, manage costs, and clarify how technology is used during the school day. |
The school board approved a policy change that means students in kindergarten through eighth grade will no longer be issued individual laptops. Instead, devices will remain in classrooms for teacher-directed use. High school students will still receive their own devices.
Supporters of the change say it could help reduce financial losses tied to damaged devices. WDEF reported that others raised concerns about equal access to learning materials outside the classroom, especially for students who may not have technology available at home.
Superintendent Dr. Justin Robertson said the district would work through those concerns and described the move as a return to a previous approach. He also said part of the concern, especially in middle schools, involved how devices were being treated.
