McKamey Animal Center Offers Free Adoptions Amid Crowding |
Chattanooga shelter asks residents to adopt, foster or help reunite lost pets |

McKamey Animal Center is asking Chattanooga-area residents for immediate help as the number of animals in its care greatly exceeds the shelter’s intended capacity.
The center reported nearly 600 animals on its census, compared with space designed to humanely house approximately 275.
That imbalance leaves staff trying to care for far more dogs and cats than the building was intended to accommodate.
To encourage placements, McKamey announced that adoption fees are waived through October 31.
Residents who have been considering adding a pet to their household may find this a timely opportunity to meet an animal in need.
Adoption is not the only way to help.
Temporary fostering can create valuable room at the shelter, while sharing information about adoptable animals can help connect them with potential homes.
The center also asks people who find a stray animal to consider whether it may belong to someone nearby before assuming it has no owner.
Checking with neighbors and submitting a found-pet report can sometimes reunite a family without an unnecessary shelter stay.
The pressure on available space is urgent, but residents can contribute in several ways according to their circumstances.
Before visiting, prospective adopters and volunteers should confirm current hours, available animals and program details directly with the center.
Even short-term assistance could make a meaningful difference. |
